Torchwood: Lost Souls

Torchwood: Lost Souls was an interesting experiment, a Torchwood play based on a real life event in this case the experiment at CERN in Geneva to try and recreate the big bang which has a few people convinced that the world would end and that the planet may be sucked through a black hole.

Of course nothing of the sort happened and we are all still here and you are reading this so all’s well that end’s well. I quite liked how they managed to tie in a Torchwood episode with a real life event but still make it like an episode of the series itself. Of course being on the radio at 2pm in the afternoon meant that there was no swearing but they did manage to slip in a few sexual references without being as direct as they might normally have been.

Being a radio play there was an awful lot of exposition including a long speech by Captain Jack on what CERN was and what was happening there at the time. I must admit that John Barrowman came across rather stilted in his peformances as Captain Jack in the play and I wondered if that was something to with the fact that you couldn’t see him doing his thing. The same could be said for Freema Agyeman who did her best as Martha.

Both Ianto and Gwen came across quite well in this play and as is usual Gareth David Lloyd got all of the best lines even if towards the plays conclusion he did revert back a bit to the Ianto of series 1, but you will have to listen to it as to why he reverts back to that state.

Before the play they has a little scene setter where Jack, Gwen and Ianto were chasing a weevil through Cardiff which was necessary incase there were listeners who had never seen Torchwood before but it did seem a little at odds with the rest of play which was less like an episode of Torchwood and more like a Jon Pertwee era Doctor Who story. Lost Sould is worth a listen definitely, but it won’t be something that will stick in the memory.
